Rave Reviews Book Club

Posted on

Having invited everyone to join the Rave Reviews Club, you might have heard that I’m no longer in it. Sometimes there are just too many things going on – life’s a funny old thing that way. Anyway. I had to take a step back, and I’m going to have to slow down a little online to deal with a couple of real life issues for just a while until they’re fixed.

I do have to say though, that I’m totally behind the Rave Reviews Book Club, what they stand for, what they’re doing, and I think that the people in it are great, and the support that is being given and shared is just fantastic. I have no intention of not keeping up my end of the book buying and reviewing deal that I signed up for, and that’s still what I’m doing and will carry on doing – got three on the go right now. I’m all for this club, and I wouldn’t want anyone to think that I don’t totally support what they are doing because I can’t partake too much right now. So good luck to everyone there – you’re all doing wonderfully.

On a bit of a bum note. When I published African Me & Satellite TV, Amazon loaded a completely different Kindle book, using the Createspace file somehow. This item was rotten as far as formatting was concerned, and pretty much unreadable as far as I could see. Not to mention that they were charging the paper book price for it. Not great stuff. I reported it, and was told that it was gone and that all was hunky dory. Well – not so much. I’ve had some really bad reviews about editing/formatting, so I’ve been racking my old brain trying to figure out why. I’ve gone through the book and found a couple of typos and grammar gremlins, but couldn’t see any formatting problems, so I got hold of Amazon again. Eventually one of those guys found that Createspace thing was still there – and that people had bought it! It should be totally gone in a day or so, but still, I’m really not happy that anyone would think that I would actually try to sell such an abomination, so if anyone actually has bought it, please contact me so that I can fix the problem.

Zooming off – will catch up with all you lovely people in just a bit.

Oh boy do I empathise with that post. I’m like you – full of enthusiasm and my goodwill writing cheques that my poor battered brain can’t cash. (mine, not yours) and sometimes we just have to say “Really sorry but…” before we end up in a “rest home”.
I think you should shout it from the rooftops that it was Amazon’s fault, not yours, offer a new copy to anyone who bought the duff one, especially those who left bad reviews and take the cost on the chin as a way of saving your reputation. It’s only my suggestion of what I’d do because you’ve worked very hard on having a strong on-line presence and you don’ t kneed an Amazonian F-up ruining it for you.
I’ll help in any way I can – need me to blog on it? I’m happy to. xxx

Wow Ailsa – you’ve nailed it! My head is not the most calm place to be at the best of times to be honest. I don’t know why I always think that I can turn 24 hours into 48 hours just because I have to. I’ll definitely refund every one of them and give them a real copy too. Thank you Ailsa – I really will appreciate any help. So sorry to be so late answering – I have had to be doing something out of my house every day, and when I come home I’ve been lurking under the couch pretending to be a puddle. I really appreciate your support my friend – thank you! XXXXX

That’s terrible. Amazon always seems rather slow to do stuff like that. I was told once that they don’t even get rid of those pages in case someone bought it and wants to return. That’s why my first attempt at publishing Beginning of a Hero is still around. It’s no longer in print, but they won’t get rid of the page. Though that’s all my doing. I hope they fix their mistake for you because that sounds really frustrating.

It really is not fun Charles, but I’m hopeful it won’t be a bigger disaster. I don’t understand why they told me months ago that it was gone – that’s just so dangerously unprofessional it’s scary. I’m going to triple check every little thing I do there from now on. Can you not unpublish that page yourself? I have checked today and I can’t find that corrupted issue, but I know for sure that there are others that have already been sold. I never understand those sales reports anyway, but now I wish I’d queried some of the strange pricing that popped up. Never mind – learning all the time. 🙂

I believe you can take it down for sale, but you’ll lose all rankings and sale stats. It’s strange though. I do know of some Indie Authors who took their books down and the Amazon page was deleted. Not sure how they did it or if it was done because they angered the Amazon Gods.

I reckon it’s very possible to anger those Gods. I’ve always made a massive effort to be polite to the KDP guys because when I first opened my Amazon account to buy books, I got a little sarcastic with someone who suggested that I didn’t actually live in Zimbabwe because my internet service provider was in Kenya. Wow – did I get given the run around. Had to send copies of my passport and proof of residence and everything at the end of a week long battle. Not a good idea to get up those nostrils.

I try to keep my head down and only connect them on emergencies like information vanishing. I think too many indie authors have screamed at them for minor things that they are quick to punish.

I totally agree. I’ve seen some indies share what they’ve argued about there a couple of times and I’ve felt sorry for the Amazon guys. Sugar generally works, and now I’ve found that proper double checking will too.

Amazing what you can do by being polite and respectful. Not everything needs to be fought like an enraged rhino.

I hope those ‘real life’ issues resolve themselves soon. As for that Amazon nightmare, I can hardly imagine what that must be like. To get slated for what you haven’t done in that way must be very difficult to deal with, especially, as you say, with real life also shouting in your ear. Good luck with everything

Thank you Peter – me too! I’m sure that everything happens for a good reason, so we have to just roll with these things, and know that whatever is waiting at the other side is good. I should be online all the time now doing damage control, but not much I can do about that right now either. Thank you Peter!

We will be here – as far as Amazon is concerned – they keep using an edition of a book that has had a different cover for 6 years!! I hope all is resolved on all fronts soon. From your distant but loving friend.

Thank you my GORGEOUS Sally! Up until now I’ve always been really impressed with Amazon’s service, but this time I noticed that every answer to my ongoing email was from a different person. That’s why one can say that the problem is sorted when it isn’t. It’s awful that they’ve done that to you for six years – wow! Maybe because we’re overly polite in case they get vengeful or something. LOVE AND HUGS to you! 🙂 XXXXXXX

They are in overload to be honest – I am doing that particular book in audio shortly – lots of gin for the throat – and I will sell directly from my site where the correct copy that is in print will be on. It is just the frustration level. Hope this week going well and love and hugs back. XXX

So sorry this has been such a nightmare for you, Jo. I can appreciate how sickening it must be to get bad reviews when the fault is not in your writing but in Amazon’s formatting. As one who joined the shout of, ‘The formatting makes it difficult to read.’ I can only apologize. I never intended it to sound critical of your writing. I have only respect and admiration for you, dear friend. X

Not to worry, and thanks for the support Christine. This has been quite an epic fail, no matter that it wasn’t my fault, although there were a couple of typos to be honest. It will pass and be looked back on with a chuckle hopefully. Have a lovely week. 🙂 xx

Glad to hear it ” wasn’t you!” In reading it, I was making notes of errors to quietly send to you (no need for bad reviews for that stuff, people!) but now I will just read and not worry about it. Good luck to you!

Thank you Ria! I would like to refund you though – please would you pop your email address in my Contact Me box, and I’ll zoom over an Amazon certificate or pay it into PayPal for you. That must be a truly rotten reading experience! Sorry I’m so late answering but I’ve had to be out most of the time just lately. Thanks again!

No, no, that is not necessary! I was just going to keep track of errors to let you (quietly) know about them, but now I can just read without the worry. The formatting/errors are really not that bad. I’ve read so much worse…on the top 5 Amazon best seller list, no less! Some amount of tones of grey colors lol 😉

Thank you so much Ria. I looked at that thing Amazon had up for sale for so many months, and I really cringe at the thought of anyone trying to read it. Add even one typo to that and – wow! Shame. Thanks for being so kind. 🙂

Thank you my dear Sherri. It’s funny how life just does what it wants no matter how many times you try and instruct it. 🙂 I’m feeling more confident now that everything will turn out alright. I’m quite shocked at Amazon to be honest. It was their mistake, and they say that they can’t let anyone know that that book should never have been offered for sale. They said I should go and sort it out on Amazon forums, and from what I’ve heard what goes on there sometimes would make The Texas Chainsaw massacre look like a tea party. Thank you for the hugs and love and prayers Sherri – it’s friends like you who make it less painful to creep out from under the table. 🙂 MUCH LOVE AND HUGS HUGS HUGS! I’m really glad you posted this on Rave Reviews. After you decided to no longer be a member, others also dropped out which made me question my own membership in the Club. My only problem is that I’m not on Twitter and really don’t intend to be (at least for sometime, if ever) – I have enough to handle as it is – and the Club tends to communicate a lot through Twitter. So I’m pretty much a silent member.
I hope everything works out with your book. 🙂

Thanks Carol! I know I wasn’t there long, but I really thought it was a great club – still do. I think that members who read their four book minimum every year and post their reviews is really the most important thing. Now that I’m back online properly again I’ll be reading and reviewing at least twelve club books because while I was there I got the most amazing support from the board and the members too. Life is hectic though – I’m with you on that one! 🙂
