Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

Posted on Updated on

Yargh – crap! I mean that in a very literal sense. I have over 8 000 email notifications built up from my absence still left to open, and strangely, rather than being a massive chore it’s been more like opening pressies every time. I love what I do, and I love the friends I have now, and I love the new books, and reviews, and meltdowns, and celebrations, and every little thing you all share. Love all of you. Apart from the trolls of course – nobody thinks that you rotten, vicious little asses are cool. Anyway.

So, back to the crap. Getting Bella the puppy was a really big deal for me. Because I spend so much time on my own I wanted to get a dog. The feathered horde head off to bed at sundown, and apart from anything else there have been some really nasty housebreaking attacks around here, so a dog is really a must – and maybe a tazer now that I’ve sold my 9mm Browning. Or maybe I’ll just get another. I’m not into violence, but after what I’ve seen in the papers about what’s been done to innocent grannies and little girls, I’ll be more than comfortable taking a vicious murderer down.

Again – back to the crap. Sorry for the side route. Bella has totally ignored all of her official puppy toys – feet, magazine racks, the couch, and all sorts of other things are much more fun to chew apparently. She is the sweetest, cleverest little soul though – apart from the crapping, as I said. There are bits of you name it all over the house. It’s been raining, so she’s covered in mud – me too – and the carpets. This has the feathered horde behaving incredibly badly though, and I’m really worried that someone is going to get munched.

They reckon that her bed is the place to be. Her food has obviously been stolen from them, and they’ve all been bouncing on her head at every opportunity to reclaim it. Little buggers – I thought that I would have to protect my innocent birds from a possibly marauding dog but it turns out that the dog is the one who needs protection. The feathery little guys are absolute barbarians and bullies! I’m going to have to be totally on the ball all the time to make sure that none of them get accidentally noshed. So.

I’m hoping to get back to my scribbling in a day or two, editing and checking of published scribbles at the top of the list, but more than anything I can’t wait to zone out again and immerse myself in Shadow People two and three. I’m seriously considering ditching marketing totally, and just having fun with my blogger and twitter buddies, and writing – just writing for the love of it.

Yay new puppies!! My new puppy does like her official toys, and then shredding paper, plastic pop bottles and for some reason seems to think food at the dinner table is better than what’s in her bowl. I love puppies. Bella is such a lovely name too. 😀

Cool! Like babies who toss the fancy stuff in favour of banging pot lids together. 😀 What sort of puppy have you got? My birds are that way too. I dish up exactly what the humans are having on a plate for them, but they insist on joining me and chowing down on whatever I’m having instead. 🙂

    8,000 e-mails..YIKES!
I’ve been debating for some time whether to get a dog or not…I’ve been weighing the pros and cons…I just don’t know if I want to take up that responsibility but then I see your dog and i kind of melt. 🙂

I reckon the pros are the way to go. The house feels “just right” with her in it – puddles and all. PS: I know you’re not into Twitter, so I must tell you I bought your Mourning Has Broken – very much looking forward to reading it. 🙂 xx

Cute puppy. Problem with trolls of the non-bird variety?

She is adorable, and HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU for today! 🙂 I didn’t have a troll problem – I felt sorry for Sarah Daltry who did seem to though, but apparently it was just some sort of con to garner sympathy & sell more books. I reblogged her “farewell” post, but I’ve taken it down now. She’s reposted that a fan threatened to do herself in if she took her books down, so she’s leaving them up. LOL! What a load. 😀

I heard about her quitting and then people saying it was a con. Though I have no idea what’s really going on since I never followed her. Think I’ll just keep my head down on that one.

        Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Pleasure Charles – I hope you had a lovely day. All the birthday wishes going your way made me smile – you have some awesome friends. 😀 If it’s true that she used that as a marketing ploy (and it looks like she did) then it’s a new one on me. Imagine using people’s sympathy to sell books! Sucks a bit. 🙂

I’ve heard of the ploy before, but never seen it in action. There seems to be a lot of nasty tricks out there. I keep wondering why people put so much time and energy into such elaborate schemes. Use all of that for writing another book and it’ll be better for everyone.

The birthday was fun. Today is the movie/lunch with the wife. Somehow my birthday is running into 4 days of events.

I’m one of those nutters that goes more gooey over puppies than babies! I’m with you – I finally got back to writing after six months (following car crash) and did 1500 words – may not be much to some but … woohoo. Hope you take off like a rocket, sweetie!

And I’m with you in the nutter department! The coolest thing about being this age is that you can goo and gaa at the little cuties, and then hand them back to mom for the nappy changing. Puppies and crazy birds are right up my street now. I think you’re brilliant the way you zoom along, never letting any life thing get in your way, so totally WOO HOO for those words – you make me laugh and smile every day I read what you have to say – love it! Thank you Ailsa. 🙂 XXXX

Dogs are fun. We have two, but they can be quite a bit of a headache and a lot of work. They’re like children.

My birds have me well trained with the amount of mess they make, so the morning poop session hasn’t been too bad so far. I haven’t got a clue how the potty training works though, so it’s generally just a mad rush every time she looks a little thoughtful. It’s totally worth it though – she’s a proper little character. 🙂

Normally I don’t get more than 4 – 500 a day so it just takes a couple of hours, but with all the time off line now they’ve built up, so I’m only edging a bit closer every day to catch up now. I should probably delete them, but I’ve often opened an email that I thought was just junk and found a fantastic message in it – so plod on I must. 🙂

I only do marketing when I’ve a book coming out. The rest of the time I just read blogs and write stuff. I reckon I’ll sell more books by just chatting to people because that’s how I do it in the real works and I sell far more there.

Hope the menagerie settle down together soon.

    Cheers

I’ll buy your books firstly because of your blogging and how cool you are, but then I buy the rest because you write brilliantly, and you absolutely write what I love to read. Like when I read my first Pratchett book – The Carpet People – I knew I’d read everything he ever writes. My feathered horde have turned into little barbarians, but the pup is perfectly behaved – go figure. 😀

Thanks. That’s lovely to hear. I read, literally, about 10 books a year. As a mum, they have to be the kinds of books I can read in 5 minute bursts while I’m having a wee. I hope the feathered hoarde shake down eventually.

        Cheers

Geez, I thought I had a lot of emails with a few hundred to get through!! You are an amazing woman Jo, I love your posts and your wit and humour and honesty and that you tell it how it is 🙂
You never know with animals do you? My ex had a thing about having two dogs. We always had an indoors, family dog, usually labs or cross lab/collies but he wanted an outside dog for protection. We always got them from the pound to rescue them but every dog we got proved to be an absolute nightmare!!! Not that for one minute I’m suggesting that your darling Bella is, she is just a puppy and you know she will soon be house trained and stop pooping everywhere! I doubt she will do any harm to your feathered friends. Our massive lab Monty was terrified of our cat Willow!
Hope you never need protection my friend…but I’m with you, I wouldn’t hesitate to protect my family or myself 🙂
Much love and BIG hugs to you my lovely friend 🙂 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 🙂
