Never Post When You’re Overtired – Ahem…

Posted on Updated on

For the last little while, I’ve been totally absorbed in writing books. Just lately I’ve been working on a couple of sketches for a fellow author’s lovely children’s book, and I’m thinking that I will probably be a bit slack with the blogosphere until I’m finished. So please forgive me for being tardy with answering comments for a couple of days.

I’ve been thinking about how many fingers we should have in any particular pie. I follow a lot of blogs, and I love to read as many of them as I can every day. Gorgeous pics, recipes, world news, art, poetry, funny guys – all of these things rock my boat. Quite a lot of the blogs that I follow are writerly blogs – obviously. And I must say that I’m getting a little bored with all the same colour feet.

Go buy a Stephen King book – just as research you understand. That guy breaks so many grammar police rules, he really shouldn’t be published at all – but do I love him? Would I let him in on a cold dark night? Hell yeah – that guy has taken me on so many wild rides, he’s just about family. d1
No prologues people!! Oh shut up man. Ever heard of Anne Mccaffrey? How the hell else will you know what has gone before? So many seriously famous writers have broken the mould, and anyway, if you’re writing a series it’s kind of nice to know what happened before – even if you did read the books – we forget stuff.
???????????????????????????????????????
Oh Lordie, please stick to one genre! This is the fingers in pie thing thought that happened. Today I wrote a bit of my angsty Emmaline, and then a bit of Shadow People – then I went on to draw kiddies pics. And I thought – Oh dear – I’m doing it all wrong – these people say I should be….

Naah! If you are writing only for the purpose of making a buck, then please google “writing for money” – there are loads of people willing to pay you for your article writerly skill. Otherwise, I suggest that you relax a little, forget what everyone else says is a rule cast in stone, scribble your best scribble, grow that wild black tulip, draw an outrageously bad picture of a frog. Me – I’m just doing all the bits I love. Stick all your fingers and toes into pies all over the place. Have fun. And to the grammar police I say… Well… And don’t ever start your sentence with And… Just be you, and let the devil take that hindmost thing. You only have now – enjoy it – and never mind the rest. ❤

Ouch! I think I am guilty of those things you mentioned. 😀
Can’t help it! The Whisper could be a nagger. 🙂
What is creativity if it is a straight line? You know what I mean. 🙂

Not so much guilty as blessed, I’m thinking, and straight lines will make your eyes hurt. 😉 X

I suddenly want pie, but I’m afraid it will taste like fingers or feet now.

Now I want pie too – and I didn’t even think about eating it to begin with. 😀 Some people are partial to toes, but maybe not in their pie.

I have two WIPs. I don’t work on them simultaneously because they are two different genres. But, if I get tired of writing in one, I’ll pick up the other. They are two entirely different genres though. The writing styles are also entirely different. It takes me a minute or two to switch bats. One is about two church going sisters in the south in the fifties and the other is a crime novel. It really got interesting though, when my crime novel detective’s sidekick had to blow up a church. Sometimes it actually works to blend them a little.

*Switch bats* – love that. And love the blending too! The stuff that writers come up with always makes me happy to hear – now I want to know why he had to blow up a church. 😀 I also have a couple of WIPs on the go – more than a couple to be truthful, and I’m the same – when I get stuck with one, it always works to go to another. I reckon I’ll be thinking of ways to pop an alien into my drama now. LOL!

I agree, writing should be fun. If it isn’t something you enjoy, then why would a reader enjoy it? It’s not hard to tell the underlying feeling when you read something…whether it is written with the joy of writing, or if it was drudgery, just to get something written down. By the way, I love pie! (And) that is the cutest little bird!:)

That is so spot on! If a story is hard work to read, it probably was hard work to write. I love pie too – especially strawberry – although not with toes in it. 😀 That little guy is my weaver bird, Jelly, sunning himself on a windowsill when he was still a baby. 🙂

Reasonable rules are cool, but literary snootery is just irritating. 😀 I hope your woes end soon Sherri – it’s rotten when things don’t work properly – just so long as you don’t stress and know that we’re all still here and loving you. Hi Jo! I love Stephen King too! He’s the best storyteller ever. He entertains like no other and isn’t that what it’s all about? Some writers act like they’re finding the cure for cancer. I loved your post. You are so witty–great sense of humor. 😉

Ha ha haaaaa! That’s so funny, but so true too. Some guys just get overly anal about the whole thing, and I think there’s plenty room for everyone to explore their own style. It would be seriously boring if everyone just did the same old things. Stephen King is *the best storyteller ever* – spot on Vashti! And his rulebreaking helps with that too. HUGS 🙂 X

Thanks, Jo. Part of the fun of writing is to learn how far you can go in breaking the rules – even your own – without losing the reader.

That’s so true – most of my favourite writers don’t conform. I think that rigidly sticking to rules made up by… (actually, that’s a good point – who gets to make up these rules?)… doesn’t make for reading that whisks you away. 🙂
