Insistant Muses

Posted on Updated on

Always falling off the bus. Things are a little chaotic here at the moment – lots that has to be done by currently fairly sickly me. It’s all getting nicely done though, and I’m nearly done with the doing, not to mention being done in. Lots of dones. I’m not going to complain overly much about not being able to get to my computer lately, because I’m enjoying the feel of bum in chair here again far too much. Pardon the cobwebs around here though. Although I wonder sometimes why we all feel the need to apologise so much for things that we have no control over – trying to make excuses for life. It happens the way it should probably, and resistance is generally futile, so you just have to do the best that you can.

My trouble with not writing every day is that when I spend too much time doing physical things my muse gets to run loose in my mind, tossing back Tequila slammers and dropping cigar ash all over the furniture. She’s a wild one, my muse. And a bully too. No point in fighting when she’s on a roll. Thanks to her recent rowdy spree, from right now I’ll be working on three books instead of just the two being published this year. The WIP she hauled forward while I’ve been slaving away is one that I was going to publish as a short-ish story last year, but put on the shelf with quite a lot of other things when time ran away from me.

It’s going to be a full length book instead of a short now, and I’m quite excited that it’s inserted itself into my daily writing pile. I enjoy working on more than one story every day a lot more than I enjoyed writing one at a time. It keeps them all fresh and current for me, and my writing never feels like a chore, because I know that as soon as I slow down on one I have another waiting for me. I’m glad too that I never got around to publishing it as a short. As madam muse kept on bringing it up so much more kept happening, and now I’m excited to be fleshing it out to what it should be. It’s true what Stephen King says – write your book, then toss it in a drawer for a year before getting to editing and publishing. Sometimes these stories stew very nicely, and looking at them with fresh eyes after a while shows you exactly what they need to be.

So – three books for 2014 it is, and I know I’m going to love every minute of the process this time. It’s all about the writing at the end of the day. Still – this is such an amazing time to be an indie writer, with all the things happening in the publishing world right now. Hissy fits and pies thrown in faces all over the place in our world of books, changes and new opportunities popping up. I reckon that I personally will sit back and watch for a month or so to see how things go before I leap into the new toy fray. Who knows where this industry will be in a couple of years, but it’s pretty certain that it won’t be what it is today, and in the meantime, I for one am loving the ride and enjoying the views.

I used to be frenetic when it came to writing as well Jo. In 2012 I published four eBooks. No more. This latest one I’m working on will be finished when it is finished and not a moment sooner. 😉

I agree with you Jack – they’ll be done when they’re done. 🙂 These are all quite a long way done though because they were supposed to be published one by one from the beginning of this year so unless I really do get hit in the head by a rogue spare tyre (real possibility with me), it should be doable. If not though I won’t worry too much. X

Thanks Juan! 🙂 It’s brilliant that the world is our blogger oyster these days with the different lingos, and we all get to make up new words too – do it all the time. Maybe one day all those sci-fi stories about one crazy world language will come true. 🙂

That’s always happening to me! Natural nosiness helps too, and I have piles of it. I’m feeling a bit secretive with my number three at the moment – odd for me – but so happy happy to have it surface again. 🙂 XXXXX

3 projects in one day? That’s really impressive. Also maybe a little looney. 😛

Truth – I do love the loony. 😀 How many books did you say you were writing right about now Mr Yallowitz? It’s great though even though I sometimes have to really try to stop myself from adding to my pile, or I won’t live long enough to publish them all. 🙂

I have a bunch, but I never try to work with more than one a day. I just tried to edit one book and then went back to a previous one, which was confusing. I had to keep remembering which one came first.

I’m pretty sure I’m hyper in most ways, and I’ve always hopped around till I’m too tired to hop no more. I think because the three I’ve got going right now are all completely different makes it easier for me to change straight from on to another. I do sometimes get a bit tangled when I’ve got to many in the Shadow People series open at the same time though.

I liked Jack’s plea for someone to tell you to slow down Jo – as if anyone COULD slow you down
You only know two speeds –
Stationary because of illness, but engine still racing –
    and –
Full Speed Ahead (plus turbocharged overdrive and Star Trek Chief Engineer Scotty’s ‘She Canna Tak It Cap’n’)
    LOL 😀

LOLOL! “She Canna Tak It Cap’n” – Ha ha haaaaa! Crazy but it’s TRUE!! Face down on the floor with legs over chair above, or ZOOMING. I do love my zooming Chris, and I seriously miss it when something nobbles me. I’m getting a handle on this this poor old bod though, so get the hairpins out. 😀 X

I am very impressed you can handle so many different writing projects at the same time. Very cool, I do understand the why of it though, keeping it fresh is a really good idea.

You’ve got quite a pile of projects on the go yourself Bradley. 😀 It’s weird though – I used to get very tense with one book on the go. It took up my whole world and I’d often want to curl up into a ball under a table somewhere thinking about what and where it should be. With a couple on the go I don’t fixate, so I’m much more relaxed and really have a ball. If I’m not enjoying the scribbling it comes out all wrong, so I’ll stay with the bouncing.

I’m a one at a time guy. The very idea of writing more than one at a time scares me. I have to multitask at my paycheck job. I can do it my way on my days off.

I reckon you have more than enough multitasking going on without adding to your to do pile. I’ve come to love it though – before when a plot bunny popped up it could take a good long while before I got moving properly again, but this way after I move on to another they seem to resolve themselves. It’s so cool to me to hear about different writers ways – all so individual in their habits, but all just as cool. 🙂

There are other projects mixed in, for sure. There’s the blog, critiquing, the occasional short piece. Only one novel at a time though.

We are all different, and we have to use the rules that apply to us.

Did it ever occur to you that your muse has a thing for WIPs? Perhaps you can tame her – trick her – and think of your progressive works as PIMPs? (passages in my progression) – just a thought! 🙂

    Wow, 3 books in 2014! That’s a great achievement.
I with you, Jo about working on more than one novel. I ten to go in spurts of devoting an entire month to each novel. The disadvantage to writing more than one novel at a time is that it takes longer before you finish one. 🙂

The thought of them taking longer doing them at the same time also made me hesitate before I jumped in. I want to publish them in very quick succession this time because there’s been such a long break in writing properly for me this year. I’m on a big roll now though, and loving it. 🙂 X

Thank you dear Olga. We can only hope with the crazy ride 2014 seems to be for everyone. Now I’m interested in your alternatives 😀 nosy scribblers. I’m very positive though – trust me to get such a weird ailment. You think you’ve nailed it but then something else pops up. The knockdowns are definitely a lot milder now, even though unexpected, so if things stay like this I’ll definitely be able to keep up. 🙂 XX

How do you do it Jo? I am so impressed. So sorry you haven’t been too well again though 😦 Still, you are so positive and inspiring and now you’re on a roll! That’s so great and I just know you are going to be so successful. I’m intrigued at what you share about the publishing industry and the way it’s going to change. Tell all!!
I’ll admit to you that I’ve been so close to putting out a blog post saying “I can’t write any more!!!” I feel like I’ve lost something and can’t seem to get back on track. Really, really freaking me out. Huge case of self-doubt with sabotage waiting to pounce on me…I know the only way out is to keep writing. So that’s what I’ll do…and follow in your lovely footsteps! Thanks so much Jo for just being lovely you and such a great friend…and you get well, okay?? Lots of love and hugs… ❤ ❤ ❤ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

You are the sweetest friend Sherri! I find it so amazing that the most talented writers have so much self-doubt – you are SUCH a brilliant writer, and there aren’t many around to be truthful. I generally only get the terrors just before publishing, but for me when I think I’ve moved to manureville with the scribbling, I work on something else for a bit instead. You have no reason to be anything but totally confident – all of the writing you’ve shared is more than enough to make me want to read more – not at all easy to do by the way. You totally rock with your photography too, so!! LOVE and humungous HUGS! ❤ XXX

You Jo make my day, you really do. I had to read your reply several times as I know you say what you mean and you don’t beat about the bush…straight up and honest and I love that about you, so I would take it and learn. So when I read this I am truly amazed, honestly I am. Thank you so much, you are so lovely. I love the way you turn a phrase…manureville…ha!! What a great way to put it! That’s really good advice, to switch to something else. Really helps so I’m learning 😉 Writing is a tough gig isn’t it, even though it’s something we dreamed of doing and love doing. I’m also so glad you enjoy the pics too…good job I took so many when I did, who knew I’d ever be sharing them here! Ahh well, life is stranger than fiction, so they say 😉
Huge hugs and tons of love to you my dear, wonderful friend…and now I write, and will try to put that self-doubt to bed… 🙂 ❤ ❤ ❤ xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
