Your Number One Fan
Us indie scribblers are a hardworking bunch. We write. We read. We (try) to learn marketing. As well as that we get to poke our mostly non-techie brains with big sticks to figure out how to produce books and cover art that can measure up – and then some if you want to be noticed in a good way – to traditionally published works. And those who really want to get there inevitably do I reckon. The nicest thing for me about indie websites is always when the formal author disappears now and then, and up pops a wonderfully relatable to rant, or recipe for homemade bunion buster. Writers are creative souls, and so often share other parts of their creativity too. I love it all, and those are the guys who catch my eye, make me eyeball their book blurb, and generally buy them. My TBR pile is epically proportioned, but I’ll get to read all of them eventually.
One of my favourite things about Stephen King’s books have always been his lengthy forwards. Talking about his life and thoughts, and mundane things. His website though these days is a little clinical – only talking about new and upcoming releases – so as a new reader you’d have to buy one of his books first to get sucked into that King magic. Ann Rice has a fan base that would follow her to death into battle with plastic swords if she asked, because she chats to her fans every day. Those vampire lovers didn’t bat an eye when she embraced religion and wrote a couple of very un-vampire books.
These are the writers I follow, and find fascinating. There is nothing at all interesting about seeing blog after blog extolling the virtues of a single book for months and months. I like the real looks into my favourite author’s lives much more. I’m a peeper – I admit it – but so are most of us after all. Anyway.
I’m getting less and less fall down, head in the sand tired day by day, and today I realised that I must be on the mend when I decided to make up my own new LOL, ROTFL type thingys to confuse people on Twitter, just off the cuff as I go along. I’m betting nobody will call me on these things. #QBA
PS. I will post a plastic bottle of my very own home-made, cranium exploding, but suspiciously addictive, chilli sauce to anyone who fancies procrastinating long enough to tell me what #QBA means.

You too John – you guys I admire so much are very lucky I live so far away, or I’d be peering in your windows. You’re a wonderful role model and friend. In fact – your website is a perfect example of an author providing peeps into their thoughts and lives. 🙂

George RR Martin’s blog is fun, or rather Not a Blog. He talks about his touring and other random stuff in his life and then now and again mocks the people who are asking when the next Ice and Fire book will be release, lol.

I like the blogs that include a slice of life myself. We all research, write, and struggle with the same issues. It’s nice to see a recipe or fun event once in awhile. Those are my favorites.

I love the way you write–as if you’re talking to us, your readers in a face-to-face conversation. Call it an aura or charisma, or both? But I always enjoy your posts!

You’re a love Aina! Talking here always feels very real to me though – I think that with blog friends we pay more attention to what we each say than in the physical where people don’t really listen properly sometimes. That’s why I have friends here who I would do so much more for than a lot of those I’ve seen face to face. XX

Thanks Christine – this getting well thing has been really surreal what with one thing and another. I got superstitious about saying I felt good after a bit because every time I did something else would kick off. I think I am better now though. **Ducks** 😀 X

I don’t know what “QBA” means but hopefully I’ll find out. I do agree with you about authors banging on about their books or why their main character is frightened of eggs or some other curious fact. I always tell people that no one starts a \blog to read anyone else’s, and to gain any attention, you have to show a sincere interest in others, I have just got the sales figures on my first book, for its first quarter, and the are bogglingly disappointing. Shall I give up trying to be read. No, but I will not bang on about it except to you. Oh OK, I’ll shut up now.

Questionable Behaviour Afoot. 😀 Frightened of eggs! Ha ha haaaa! That really would make a hilarious story though. I very seldom look at my sales figures right now because I don’t think that I did the right marketing things when I published to begin with. In fact I never did anything at all, but I’m looking forward to trying to do a bit of blog touring later this year with the new ones – you just never know. 😉

Wonderful blog Jo. I also appreciate the chance to peek into the occasional open window of other authors and bloggers. We don’t want to end up sounding like used car salesmen out here yapping on about our books day after day. Human interest and letting others in once in a while proves we are all human and not just book blog machines. I went on a sort of rant last night but my heart was in the right place as yours always is. 🙂
I have no clue what #QBA means but I’ll go for Quintessential Bad Ass lol

I must say, your post last night was really spot on – I totally agree with you, and I believe sharing your feelings and heart like that is a really good thing – maybe to open eyeballs that aren’t. I was also in marketing like you years ago, and I wonder if that’s what’s made me run away from the hard sell authors. 😀 It was Questionable Behaviour Afoot but I like yours BETTER – Quintessential Bad Ass! Cool moniker. X

I had great fun prancing off to twitter to look up #QBA. On my way, I thought, “Queen’s Basketball Alliance?” “Quiet But Acerbic?” “Quit Being Addicting?” “Quell Bigamous Attitudes?” “Queue Behind Alligators?”
So, at twitter, I looked for #QBA: “Que Bonito Amour” “Quiet British Accent” “Queen B Athletics”. Then I went to your profile. I could respond to your “Queue for Eternal Awareness” with “Queue from Blind Awareness”. Finally I arrived at #WhatIsQBA, but that brought me full circle. I love treasure hunts…for a while. Then, I get obsessed. Not today, though 🙂
Finally, I peeked at your comments for a clue. Questionable Behaviour Afoot. Of course! Good one! I didn’t get a single word of it. I enjoyed the brain dump, though.
Glad you’re feeling better more consistently. Keep up the good work! It’s worth it! Then you can eat a little bit of horrid things, and not feel it, and then eat a bit more, and eventually get feeling awful, and then recover quickly 🙂
