My Workspace Blog Hop

Posted on

Forgive my disappearance the last couple of days. My internet’s been mostly useless, and then went off entirely. The service providers have apparently been on some sort of strike since the end of August, so I guess I’m lucky to have it back on at all, but it’s still slower than anything, and intermittently going off. Not impressed. Please have patience with me catching up with everyone, and comments, and blogs. In the meantime….

I was tagged by the very talented poet Pamela Beckford in the Work Space Blog Hop, which means I get to reveal my scribbling spot to the world, and then tag others to do the same.

My scribbling corner. It’s a bit of a mishmash furniture-wise, but I love it. When we left Zimbabwe last year, we packed what we could squeeze into the car – mainly the feathered horde, and apart from one thing, that was that. We walked out of the door of a massive house full of antiques and the bits and pieces that build up over years and years, with no looking back and no regrets, to start totally from scratch again here in South Africa. A friend brought that little old writing desk (to the left of the printers) down for me in the boot of his car though. It’s the only piece of furniture I didn’t want to part with, even though it’s not a valuable thing. I’ve always used it to store pens, notebooks, and general writerly bits, as well as all my painting stuff. I’d rather have burnt it than left it behind to be honest. It’s oddly become part of me – part of who I am and what I do.

Workspace

I like elbow room when I work, although at the end of most days my desk is piled up with bits of research, editing, and presents from my lovely little assistants. Part of Jelly and Button’s day jobs include ripping up the newspapers under all their food playgrounds and bringing them over to insert in my hair, ear, or nut stash.

2014-10-05 10.56.53 a

I find it easy to get to work the minute I park my rear in front of my desk, and I’m grateful to have a place all of my own to do all the bits that I do. I think that having a particular spot of your own to write is pretty much essential, and I have a lot of respect for authors who manage to get their work done when they don’t. You should have all the tools of your trade no matter what job you have, and that includes the writerly trade. Having all the files, cabinets, and notebooks that you need (and in my case about a hundred gel pens – love those editing jewels!), is also really helpful.

Edit

I don’t understand why it would be necessary to feel guilt spending money on the tools of your trade, even if you’re only starting out. I find my spot comforting, familiar, and conducive to inspiration. Some scribblers seem reluctant to insist on a space purely for them to do their work in, and reluctant to “waste” cash on anything that they need to put in it to make their workdays easier – and I reckon a lot of this stems from whoever shares their homes seeing what they do as some sort of vain, time wasting frippery, which is not nice, and best ignored if possible. Claim your space I reckon, even if it’s as small as Ursula K Leguin’s.

Wow Jo, I hadn’t realised that you had left behind so much when you moved. But I know that feeling, having left behind the big house, big car, lots of ‘stuff’ when I moved back to the UK from CA. It’s quite freeing in many ways isn’t it, if not easy at the time, once the decision is made to walk away, as you say, with no regrets 🙂 Love, love, love your working space, I can imagine you now, scribbling away with all that space around you. My space is a little smaller – not unlike Ursula’s – but hey, it really is all about claiming our space 🙂 Thanks so much for tagging me Jo, you lovely lady you. As coincidence would have it, I’m working on a writing process blog meme so will add this to that if that’s okay in a couple of weeks? Meanwhile, I hope your internet gets up and running smoothly very soon and you have a great week ahead my lovely, gorgeous friend. Hugs and lots of love… ❤ xoxoxoxoxoxoxox 😀

Thanks Jo for including me in the blog hop! I remember you talked about moving. It’s good to see you feel comfortable in your new home (even with the internet problems) and I love your assistants. At the moment due to family problems I’m staying at my parents, but when I go back home I’ll do a workplace post. I do agree with your need for space. I’m feeling it now although most of the time I’m very lucky…

I like your work-space Jo. Well organized and roomy. I actually don’t have one — just my narrow townhouse so my workplace is my sofa! LOL. And i really would hate anyone to see the state of my rented home (i go around with my eyes half shut and cringe when i accidentally open them). I will have to get creative for your blog hop — and thanks for including me. Hugs. 🙂

LOL! I think your workspace is brilliant Teagan, and it’s doing the job because I love reading the things that emanate from it. I’m a bit OCD with not being cluttered – I seriously can’t get a word out if there are to many things jiggling my elbows. HUGS! ❤

Thanks. Though I wouldn’t be sure where to put supplies. I have to admit that not having my own space does help in working with minimal equipment. Just the laptop and a shelf full of old notebooks. Okay . . . half a shelf. 🙂

My brick walls are mellow – a bit like scribbling away in your own personal cave. 😀 And the bird – that’s Jelly the weaver bird who totally inspired my Fly Birdie, right down to losing his toe. That is a very nice work space, Jo. I bet the wall is an eye relaxing part of it.Before we moved back to the States from Thailand my work space was a tiny folding table–big enough for my laptop and a spiral notebook. I love it. I also had a small window to look out at the mango trees and flowers of our tiny farm.

I too would like to read more of your living and moving from Zimbabwe.

Thank you Dannie! I love the vision of working and having the sights and wafts of mangoes and flowers through your window, and I’d love to see Thailand. I suppose that it’s not the size of the workspace so much that it’s all yours that makes it special. Now that life is settling down, lots of Zimbabwe memories are surfacing again, so I’m sure I’ll be sharing them. 🙂 X
