We all know that major events in our lives—whether good events or bad—change us as people. A victim of a crime, a spouse in a violent marriage, a couple going through an ugly divorce, a parent who has lost a child—all of these people are changed by the events they go through.
A close friend of mine was recently in an auto accident wherein someone passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. I watched my friend go from an easy going, funny, content man, to a sad, quiet, withdrawn man. The accident wasn’t his fault. And his physical injuries are healing nicely. But his mind is much more damaged, and healing much more slowly. Psychological trauma can be so devastating that the victim can no longer cope with life, while the same trauma may make the next person stronger.
