Baby Steps

Posted on

Things have been a bit hectic for me for a couple of days, so no writing, editing, or indeed anything computer related has been done so far this week. Also it’s raining so my internet sucks. Life’s funny sometimes when you have to run as fast as you can and you still don’t keep up. Never mind. I’ve got thousands of emails and notifications again, so if there’s anything important that I should be doing that I could take a while getting to, please yell at me. Loud as you like. I don’t mind at all.

I have figured out that I’m a bit of a coward. I decided that seeing as how I would be forced out into the big wide world and have to stand in queues and do horribly tedious things for days, that I would take along my camera just in case I spotted anything interesting. Well. Just holding a camera in public gets you stared at, and also glared at if you look like you’re going to aim it in anyone’s general direction. Much respect to all you street photographers out there. I gave up on that pretty quickly after getting a couple of pretty boring and bad shots, and lots of resentful and possibly threatening stares. I’ll have another go though – when I’m not feeling pressurised to do other things, because I’m collecting elements for my future cover art project. I could maybe get into the whole glaring thing when I’m my normal self – it’s actually a little funny now that I’m happily back where I belong right here at my desk.

I’m quite excited with my cover design thing, and really hope that I get it right. I was telling a friend the other day that when I was a teenager I was obsessed with sketching pictures that told a story. They ended up looking quite “different”, and I was strongly encouraged to draw normal things instead. I remember doing one of Elvis entwined with tablets, a syringe, a pink Cadillac, and a peanut butter sandwich, so I can see where that was good advice at the time. But thinking back now I also see a frustrated cover designer – hopefully. I also remember writing a terrible song about a robot, but I’ll say no more about that. For the rest of this week I’m just going to be catching up with blogs and comments, and doing mini edits on my published books, correcting gremlins still lurking in them, and then changing their paper book formats and sizes, so WIP’s will only be got back into next week.

Diving into catch up mode now, and anyone contemplating prying me away from my desk for the foreseen future can anticipate worlds of pain. Worlds. Now – a couple of my furtive and wobbly shots on my first ever camera outing. I only had the zoom lens with me, and I’m pretty sure I had it on the wrong setting – so…

This huge cross lives on a hill overlooking our little town, and is lit up at night. Whether you’re religious or not, it is strangely comforting.

Now that you mention it, there does seem to be more apprehension when you see someone with a camera or phone these days. I know I’ve pulled my iPhone out to check a text and people around me immediately act as if I’m about to take their picture. Strange and disturbingly paranoid. Makes one wonder how that became a thing.

It was a bit weird. In Zimbabwe if anyone takes a camera out people generally strike a pose – not the police of course – they’d likely bash you and stomp on your equipment. People are definitely more suspicious these days, and around here with the crime rate a couple of them probably have reason not to want their pics taken. 😀

I wonder if it’s because people fear that the picture will end up on social media and embarrass them. Like the person who took it will photoshop ridiculous things or make it look realistic. There does seem to be a fear of Internet humiliation these days.

That’s a good point. I don’t mind street photographers though, although if they zoomed in on only me I might not like it so much. I’d better be a bit more thoughtful about what I post online I reckon.

The sots are excellent Jo, I especially like the middle one where the boys are in focus but the background blurs, and the last one with the birds. Don’t let the emails get you down.

Your shots turned out well, Jo. I love the second one with all the colour and bustle of it, and the third one with the boys. Both really well taken shots. You captured a story in each one.

Would love to see how your cover concepts progress, Jo.
I enjoyed the pictures! There is a similar huge cross visible from a freeway in Tennessee, also lit up at night. However, i find the visage domineering rather than comforting. But i say take comfort and peace wherever you might see it — it’s a rare commodity these days.
    Cheers! 😀

Thanks Teagain. I’m going to load up the ones I’ve decided to sell so far this week Teagan, so I’m really collecting as many photies as I can take for inspiration. I’m not fond of in your face religion and I’ve my own kind of offbeat beliefs, but this is really far away all on its own at the top of a mountain so I love it – light shining above you as you sleep. Comfort and peace are rare indeed – especially if my last couple of weeks are anything to go by. LOL! Need a three week snooze. HUGS! 😀

    Hello Jo,
It’s lovely to see a new piece from you, and I love your photos too 🙂
You know, I feel similarly to you about street photography. As much as I’d love to try more of it, I always feel hesitant about looking ‘too obvious’ (which happens when I’m holding my big camera) and people here – including me, I’ll admit! – are *very* sensitive about ‘privacy.’

My personal philosophy is ‘don’t do to others what I wouldn’t want done to me’ and since I myself wouldn’t be happy if a stranger snapped my photo and posted online without my consent, I don’t do it to others. I know it seems ironic, maybe even hypocritical, since I love taking photographs. But I try my best to maintain a balance. I’m not sure if this makes sense…? 🙂 I guess your post really hit home, as keeping a balance with privacy & sharing artwork is something I often think about.

    Best wishes,
    Takami 🙂

I think that’s the best kind of attitude to have Takami. I don’t mind being photographed in any public place – but that’s just me I suppose. I do love looking at street photography though – I think of some of the iconic shots of the 50’s that are timeless, and I think that maybe the people in them wouldn’t mind so much at all. As long as the works are dignified and not in any way abusive or insulting then I think that taking street shots are important especially for the extremely talented guys like yourself, and sharing the art form too. I’ll definitely think twice about posting people online again though. Here’s to a wonderful week my friend. HUGS! 🙂

I enjoyed your pictures. I’m a terrible photographer myself, so I always admire someone who can do it well. And what colorful images. Sorry you were glared at. Here in the US people take pictures left, right, and center every minute of the day. Good luck with you new endeavor.

Thank you very much! I don’t think I’m much good so far, although I am loving photography and wondering why the heck I never thought of it before. I think that it must have just been a weird kind of day, or maybe the camera itself – nobody minds when I point my cellphone at them. Hope you have a wonderful week. 🙂

Thanks for sharing your photos and your piece of the world with us, Jo. You are showing me places and views I would have never have seen in my lifetime and looking at photographs also gives me inspiration.

I only started getting interested in photography about six months ago. I only use my iPhone but I’ve had great fun with taking photos even if I do get the occasional odd look while laying fully flat out on the floor with the phone pointing towards the sky or the top of a building or tree. I usually just say “trying to get a signal’.

Keep taking those photos (when you manage to get away from your desk) and keep posting them on your blog so we can carry on sharing your world.

Thanks Hugh! I would LOVE to see you stretched out “trying to get a signal” – no there’s a shot to take! Those iPhones are brilliant for photography. I know of a blogger who only uses his and sells his pictures commercially too. I was trying to figure out my camera phone the other day because you can’t always be hauling a camera around – and it’s got loads of features and settings for photography. Here’s to both of us on a really exciting picture trip! HUGS! XX

Hi Jo, I would have loved to see your Elvis sketch. You know what they say about art and beauty – eye of the beholder.

I’m not good at taking photos. But I can tell you’re already off to a great start. Photo #3 is my favourite!

I only started because I wanted original shots as cover design elements, totally believing I sucked with taking pics, but I’ve fallen in love with you. Amazing how these things just pop up out of the strangest places. HUGS! 🙂
