No More Smashwords for Me

Posted on

I’m typing this using one eye only, so if there are any typos, please direct your ire towards the massive bug that connected with my eyeball at speed this week, scratched said eyeball, and gave said eyeball one of those rotten burning infections that means a constantly runny nose and tears also. It’s my favourite eyeball too. This one doesn’t seem to work as well as the injured party, and looking at the computer screen is painful too. Anyway. This is the actual bug – I got a picture before I realised that he had an agenda, and still thought he was cute.

IMG_0788

So far I’m very happy to say that Echoes of Narcissus isn’t available on any of the free download troll sites, and right now whether I’m right or wrong, I’m convinced that this is because I haven’t published it on Smashwords. I’ve unpublished my other books there now, and as soon as they’re taken down from all the other platforms that they distribute to, I’m going to enrol them into Amazon Kindle Select. I won’t ever be using the free days option for any books other than short stories or the first in a series, but at least they’ll be available for KU downloads. For the foreseeable future I’ll be sticking with only Amazon and Createspace. I might go with Lightning Source at some later point, but that won’t affect the book’s KU status.

This probably won’t happen for a couple of months though, because I’ve been reading loads and loads of posts around and about, from authors struggling to get their books unpublished on the premium sites that Smashwords distributes them to. It seems that it takes upwards of seven weeks, even though they’re taken down pretty fast from Smashwords itself, and sometimes back and forth emails before they’re removed everywhere and eligible for AKS. That in itself would make me wary of publishing with them again. As an Indie I like to think that I have total control of where my books are sold at any given time. I know that the damage is already done with the pirating of my books that were there, but from now on they’re not going to be legally downloadable in any format other than from Amazon or my own sites, and I’ll be very careful about who I send copies to in formats other than Mobi as email attachments.

Now I’m going to try zoom through as much of blogland as I can with this eyeball – which is now also sending out many tears.

Thanks Sue – it’s been a soggy mess for days now – I’m really rotten with ongoing pain, so not a happy camper that it doesn’t seem to be improving. Whine…. 😀 That’s a really good point to make about your books! Have they never been offered as PDF or ePub anywhere else at all?

I did see a free download a couple of weeks ago from Giveaway of the Day that converts mobi files to other formats. Where there’s a will there’s probably always going to be a way – thieving sods. I got a wonderful helpful email from another author with loads of helpful information about having our books taken down from these sites, and just as soon as I can see properly again, and not drip on my keyboard, I’m definitely going to take aggressive action. If people want to sell books or give them away for free then they should write them themselves.

I have to admit that I still get pirated even being on KDP Select. Never put Books 2-6 on Smashwords, so it can still be done. Might make it a bit harder though. I do agree that getting my first book off of Smashwords to go KDP Select was a bit of a pain. It disappeared from that site swiftly, so I figured it was safe to go with Amazon. Then I had a week of emails, stress, and arguing because B&N was dragging its feet to take my book down. Guess that’s part of the risk for taking that path first. Good luck and hope your eye gets better quickly.

Thanks Charles – I’d rather have pretty much any other part injured right now than an eyeball. No writing at all so far this week – just a lot of whining. Between you and Sue my theory is knobbled now. I’m still happy to be leaving Smashwords though – Echoes is on KU, and so far I’ve had more loans on just that one book than I’ve had sales on the other sites for the other two.

The loan system definitely helps. As for the pirating, many of those sites just grab everything they can see. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. I wonder if they can make a program that steals every book out of Amazon or at least the page information to make it look like they did. Many of those sites simply deliver malware and viruses to anyone who tries to download.

I’m definitely loving the KU loans, and can’t wait to get my others up there. I wouldn’t be surprised if they download everything – those ebay guys have millions on offer too. The malware thing is a really good point – they can get into computers and use them to send all sorts of rubbish out from them, so maybe that’s the main point. My anti virus and malware programs blocked everything when I looked on those sites (I hope!) but I still managed to download my books.

They bank on people not having that protection or not keeping it up to date. I know a lot of people who tried to download movies/books and they got nailed with something. So that might be the overall goal isn’t of screwing over authors. I mean, those people don’t seem to be getting money. So what’s the real reason for doing it?

My only experience with Smashwords was for an eBook I edited (Feminist Bloggers: The 2014 Collection) that we wanted free. I have no idea whether it was pirated or will be. Otherwise, my single authored volumes is/will be on Kindle, especially as I am more and more thinking of publishing a collection of short story as one, and not one after the other.

I have no experience with CreateSpace so far, but might look into this at some point to offer a physical edition of some of my titles.

Thank you Natacha! The way to find out if it was pirated is to google the full name of the book and the author. Google will list all the sites that it can be found on and you can log on to them – just be very sure that your malware and virus protection is strong before doing that. Looking forward to seeing your book! Definitely publish paper copies of it – nothing beats holding your first book in your hands, and if you need any help – just yell. 🙂

I didn’t know you had MS Pamela – sorry! What you went through really does put this into perspective for me. Losing nearly all vision for any amount of time must be beyond terrifying. I’m terribly shortsighted and going blind has always been one of my biggest fears, so I have the utmost respect for those who manage to live full and productive lives without being able to see at all. A good friend of mine when I was very young had retinitis pigmentosa and it really hurt watching her deal with her failing eyesight, and knowing that she would go totally blind at some point. I will be much more grateful for all the things that I get to do that others don’t from now. ❤

I’m finding it very interesting how many authors are saying that they’ve only published on Amazon and still have been pirated – I reckon a little bit of research will be in order once my eyeball is usable again. That bug probably posted that he was chased by a furry feline from the Yark Nebula and fell into the nether pit of slimy hell of roundness, and then got smacked far out into the galaxy of blueness only to land painfully on hard alien ground, then to be pursued by his almost hostage taker and clicked at with the black box of doom, and only by the grace of Snerd to escape beneath a unknown thingy. 😀

It’s been working out pretty well, because I get feedback, and occasionally a review. I don’t have any faith in the countdown deal either.

Eyeball is one of my favourite words though – as in when you click on an innocent looking link and have your frontal lobe terrified to the size and knowledge of a walnut by some sort of horrible not at all erotic body part – you get to say – "Aaaargh. My eyeballs!" Smashwords delivers all formats and I'm not liking this any more at all – too easy to steal or plagiarise. Typical of the weird stuff that always happens to me Juan. I was outside taking photos of my epic taller than ten foot sunflower when I saw one of my new neighbours terrorizing kitties on the roof. I jumped up and down and made a lot of noise while it totally ignored me as always, and that bug either ran or flew straight down into my eye – hit like a small brick. Little sod clamped on to the actual eyeball with his dirty little feet.

Before you start pelting rotten apples at me – I LOVE kitties – I’m much more of a cat person than a dog person (although I love dogs too – hold with the fruit dog lovers!). My birds fly around the house at will, and these new kitties have taken to jumping on windowsills and scaring the daylights out of my little guys leading to them flying into windows and walls and hurting themselves, so I’m trying to get these kitties scared of me. Not working at all though.

I don’t think there is any guarantee your work won’t be pirated if you remove it from Smashwords. I’ve read other posts on other blogs by authors whose work were stolen, and they didn’t have it on Smashwords. As long as there are words to be stolen, there will be people who will steal them and sell them for profit.

I write a column that appears in the online and paper version of a newspaper. Last year I found my column on another site, word for word, without permission. So if they can steal from a newspaper you need a subscription to view, then they’ll get it from Amazon and every site out there.

I don’t live in fear of pirates stealing my work; if I did, I wouldn’t publish anything online. Instead I’ll keep publishing on Smashwords, Kindle and Kobo.
