Not Dead Yet

Posted on Updated on

Right. Moving on. The last couple of days have been really interesting – not interesting in a great way though. Directly after the eyeball incident, I cleverly sliced the whole top of my knuckle off with my very strong and sharp kitchen scissors. It was still attached by a thread of skin, so I stuck it back on again and plastered it up with a big pile of Betadine. It’s finally stopped popping open now, so that’s out of the way, but now I have an awesome toothache and I look like a chipmunk, so…. whoever’s sticking pins in a doll that looks just like me, kindly desist.

I missed posting my Ode to Terry Pratchett, and now I just want to catch up again, preferably without incurring any further injuries. All part of this weird collection of tiny injuries coming my way, and Terry Pratchett departing this old rock on my mother’s birthday, and me normally being sad on her birthday because she died so young got me thinking that Terry’s life – my mom’s too – should be celebrated with laughter, quaffing, and ….. stuff….. rather than too much sadness. Death is a trip we’re all going to have to take, and there’s no point in railing against it when it happens. Death is a natural part of life.

Green_sea_turtle_(1)2

What happens on the other side? I’m sure that something happens. I know that a lot of people think that the end is the end – life extinguished – nada. Not me. I don’t believe that our lives are senseless, and I would be well chuffed to be collected by Discworld’s DEATH when it’s my turn to depart this mortal coil. Hey Ho Binky!

We all run from it – avoid it – fear it, and mourn those who are taken by it, often forgetting to appreciate the life that we have right now. Sometimes we’re so wrapped up in seemingly huge problems that we forget to live. Right now I’m grateful to be alive – I plan on having as much fun as I can too. After decades of giving me laughter and comfort, both in good times and bad, Sir Terry Pratchett’s final gift to me seems to be the gift of gratitude. Not only gratitude that I’m alive and well (sort of), but also that by his example I realise that anything is possible if you set out to do it. So in honour of my best loved writerly person, I pledge to appreciate all the days I have left, to do the best that I can, and be the best I can be, and to always remember to laugh. And to scribble – a lot. His having published seventy books is definitely a goal to aim for.

Bon voyage Sir Terry – you’ll be with us always – in laughter, joy, risqué bits and fabulous wisdom. See you on the other side. Rock on.

Now – back to living – I’ll be in catch up mode for a couple of days zooming around your blogs – much safer here at my desk – I hope.

Thanks Charles – it will definitely always be an interesting looking knuckle. It really looks beyond gross, but I really wasn’t keen on having it stitched even though I really should have – coward I am.

I had to keep on putting new plasters on for a couple of days because it kept popping open, but it’s nicely sealed now. The first night I put it on a towel on an old pillow & then sort of half awake went to give it a rinse in the bathroom. Never really clicked that the plasters were gone till I looked in the mirror and saw that during the night they’d been transferred to my forehead and neck. Very scary – I looked like a proper zombie with the red eyes to match.

I’ve taped skin back together that some people would have stitched. Skin is marvelous about reconnecting sometimes, and other times, it replaces itself.

I have had several root canals because of abscesses, with the understanding that the alternative was to lose the tooth. The only way I’ve found to avoid more is oil pulling. Do you know of it? Any other ideas?

I’m going to do a blog about it in a couple of days if it holds out. I’ve also had the root canals, and have always been hugely terrified of dentists, until I met one in Zimbabwe that the locals used to call “The Ghost”. I actually fell asleep while he was doing a root canal – and that is a totally true story. Never felt so much as a prick of a needle from that old guy. I think it could be because you never saw him – he sat behind the back of your head. Maybe seeing someone with a large drill or needle coming at you causes the pain mostly. Anyway. On Monday I woke up in the wee hours in incredible pain from the tooth. My face was so swollen I was absolutely planning on heading out for antibiotics as soon as the sun came up. Not so keen on antibiotics. I was trying to think of something to bring down the pain threshold in the meantime & only had Panado. Then I remembered reading something about Xylitol and teeth when I was researching Candida, and realised I still had a packet lying around somewhere. I stopped using it long ago & substituted with honey. I found it – shut my eyes and thought of England – and shoved a half a teaspoon in my mouth & swished it towards the tooth. Within ten minutes the pain had totally gone, and within an hour the swelling started to go down. Not sure what was going on, I did the same thing five times during the course of the day, and not only did the pain stay totally gone, the swelling just kept coming down. I googled it then & saw a couple of articles from real dentists saying that they don’t use toothpaste & instead brush their teeth with xylitol. It’s weird brushing your teeth with sugar, but I have been all week and my whole mouth feels brilliant – teeth seem to be quite a bit whiter too. I don’t want to speak too soon, so I want to carry on doing it for another week or so, but I’m pretty sure I’ve figured out how to avoid the dentist. That was long – phew – sorry. 🙂

Great story! Thanks for every word of it! I have used garlic, ginger, clove oil, or Bear Root with similar results. If you destroy the inflammation that causes the pain, then you might not need the antibiotic. I was successful doing this with my last one a few weeks ago.

I agree that root canals don’t have to be traumatic. I found 2 guys who are as pleasant as a good hygienist. One uses a little cordless drill. I still haven’t found anyone who can give me the shots inconspicuously, though.

I make my own toothpaste with calcium carbonate powder (remineralizes), xylitol (keeps bacteria from sticking), cinnamon (whitens), and coconut oil. My dental hygienist helped me decide on the recipe, and we see that it’s making a difference.

Thanks always for sharing your stories. I’m wishing you well.

You’ve certainly had your share of physical problems lately! I went through a patch like that last year…it will end! The quote from Terry Pratchett was just perfect. I’d always thought that you weren’t really dead until the last person who remembers you has passed on, same thing. I like the way the Irish celebrate death – with a grand wake! One of my good friends planned a huge party for his friends after he died; we all went, had a great time, and remembered him with laughter through the tears.

My mom was so Irish! I remember the night that she died we sat up till morning completely emptying the booze cabinet – never want to see peppermint liqueur again as long as I live, but went on to too much sadness after that. I like to think that we’ll be connected to those we love or have loved for all eternity one way or another, and that we’ll meet them again somewhere or some time. I like your Irish wake – I think I’ll just pop that in my will. I’m also thinking – cremation and then scattering of ashes from a hot air balloon from a really high height – ha! There’ll be a bit of me in loads of people then. Probably not legal though. X

Though it may not necessarily result in an untimely demise for either you or a household pet, it could very well inconvenience you with the removal of a knuckle.Once a knuckle is removed the two ends of the finger have a horrible habit of separating and the only small gods I know deal mainly with sleep. I certainly wouldn’t ask that lot too many favours though.

Thank you my lovely Sherri! I’m back on top form again now – that weird week turned out to be a fabulous lesson in life in all its fullness and beauty too, so I’m a very happy bunny again. Lots and lots of love your way and massive HUGS! ❤ XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ❤

Thanks for making the time to stop by my blog. I always enjoy your visits, and especially appreciate your most recent effort after reading your update. May you find resilience as your injuries take on meaning.

Sorry I’ve been away for so long – I got a bit buried under an avalanche after missing some days. I’ve had to delete most of the older notifications now, otherwise I’d always just be trying to catch up and never be on time again. Thanks my friend – this time my little plethora of owies had really got my attention and now I’ve got a grip again, so I’ll be seeing you in the trenches again. X
