I was in the middle of typing a reply yesterday when the electricity went off – sorry Kevin! There is such a lot of poverty here that prostitution is very rife among some really young people. I’ve never really delved into the subject, but yes – it’s quite a big thing here.

Hi Jo. I hope the electricity wasn’t off for too long. That must be a real issue in a hot country, especially when freezers start to defrost and you lose expensive food stuffs. Thanks for the reply. Best, Kevin

It’s going off between three and four hours every day now. They reckon it will carry on like this through the winter, so not looking forward to when the cold sets in properly. There isn’t any schedule though, so it can just pop off at any time like yesterday mid comment.

Are the utilities (electricity, gas etc) stage owned or private in South Africa? Sorry to go off topic but what causes the failure, is it poorly maintained infrastructure/a lack of adequate investment?

It’s a government owned thing, but they tried to privatise some years ago and it’s never recovered. The infrastructure here has really slipped very badly. They don’t have enough plants and the plants they do have are not properly maintained. We have the same thing with the telephones and the public mail system. To add to the problem the workers at all these places are on some sort of strike action pretty much for most of the year. Lots of fun. 🙂
