Cops and Robbers Part Two

Posted on

Not a happy bunny.  We had another break in attempt, and the wobbly shock is just starting to set in now.  This time the sods managed to get away with a very expensive laptop that Angus bought not so long ago.  I heard Bella barking at around four this morning, had a look outside and didn’t see anything so I shuffled back to my office to my computer.  Then I heard a little noise but wasn’t overly worried because it was quite windy.  I went through to the lounge anyway, and there it was.  An arm sticking through the burglar bars waving a rake around.  I was so shocked that I never wondered why it was waving a rake around, but just freaked right out.  The only thing around that I could lay my hands on was a long fluorescent light tube, so I just grabbed that and whacked the arm, yelling “Get out of here, you f****r”.  Rude word I know, but really appropriate at the time.  The tube shattered, so I zoomed off to fetch my big knife, although my yelling had woken Angus up, who was now also beating the daylights out of the tenacious bloody arm. I reckon he’s chipped a bone on his own arm too in all that chaos, and there’s broken fluorescent glass all over the floor and blood all over the curtains.  It was really shocking the way that the arm just kept coming for more.  Not cool.
Even more not cool was trying to figure out what the arm and rake was doing in the first place.  At some point they’d already managed to hook the laptop off the dining room table onto a nice soft chair, and then they pulled the chair to the window and got hold of the laptop that way.  They really wanted it too considering that they’d added a wire hook to the side of the rake, so they must have been very busy fellows outside for quite a while.  There was a strong garden broom lying snapped in two on the floor, which I reckon they might have used to try and pull out the burglar bars first.  They’d got the broom and the rake by first getting into a locked outside room through a window they managed to open.
The police took a while to get here this time, but I’d also phoned the neighbourhood watch, who were really cool and arrived in force, but didn’t stay long after the cops got here when they got a report of a car being broken into up the road.  Walking around outside with the police we discovered that the thieves had dropped a carved walking stick.  I’ll take a picture of it later because we’ve been told not to touch anything till the fingerprint people come, and I’m a bit too shaky anyway to get a decent shot right now I reckon.  Looking at it did make me wonder how many people have been clouted with it during the course of their general activities.  Also makes me wonder if they’ll come back again, and then third time could be the charm for them.  And then even more wondering if they might think about retrieving their walking stick.  It’s obviously some specially made thing, and the head of it looks like a carved baboon face, or monkey, so I’m guessing that whoever dropped it isn’t overly happy about losing it.  Thieving sod.
I think I may have got a new reader though, as long as he’s cool with typos and a lot of scribbling and scratching out in a book.  While the one policeman was getting all the details down, he asked me what I do, and when I said I write books, the senior one asked to see them.  I haven’t actually got any around here right now apart from the old original proofs because I’m holding off ordering any until I update the back covers.  I showed him those, and he sat reading the two “diary entries” by Christopher that I put in the back of African Me while I finished giving the statement.  When they left he said he loved it and wanted to read the whole thing, so with fair warning about it being the very first proof and not looking really good at all I gave it to him.  He then thanked me for all of them and tootled off, so now I better move my jacksie and order some more.  Who knows, he might spread the word.
Right.  Now I’m off to strongly spike my tea, give Bella a big bone for saving the day a second time, and Freddie a smaller one for sleeping through the whole thing.  And now the last letter of the alphabet has gotten stuck down on my keyboard too.  Bah humbug.

Bella

Everyone pop over to Jo Robinson who had another attempted break in last night.. The thieves managed to get an arm through a locked window and hook a laptop and Bella the dog alerted Jo and her husband to the intrusion but this resulted in a stomach churning encounter.. She needs a virtual hug right now despite having managed to win a new fan for her books at the same time!!

I hate the losses we suffer from these kind of events. Everything seems so personal. Grit your teeth Jo and make sure the insurance claim goes straight in so the laptop can be replaced quickly.

As long as you don’t sign up for anything with Somnos you should eventually find sleep adjusting itself back to normal bit by bit. Mike’s father was burgled this week while he watched TV. They broke into his key safe outside and entered the flat even turning lights on in other rooms. If he’d got up to use the loo he’d have seen them. Unfortunately, much of what he had was not insured specifically so his deceased wife’s jewellery and his own gold rings, watches etc aren’t insured because in his 80’s he no longer has proof of purchase or of inheritance. He thought himself safe with people having to break into the building itself before having to break into his flat. He thought a key safe with a code of entry was sufficient.
I hope all these thieves are found and punished properly.

That is terrible David! The trauma of knowing that those evil sods were actually in his home and could have hurt him must be awful. It’s so so sad that anyone would break in to anyone’s personal space and steal their precious things – things that they’ll sell for a pittance that can never be replaced. Maybe the punishments for these crimes aren’t good enough – around here they’re generally back on the streets in four months, and I’ve now found that the cops aren’t really bothered to investigate. Last week there were loads of home invasions around here. One where the burglars entered the kitchen of a medical doctor, but I’m happy to say that for once the intruder didn’t get to hurt the home owner. That good doc and his son put fourteen rounds into him, so we have one less murderous thief on the streets. Much love and HUGS to you dear David, and to Mike’s father many more too. ❤ XXXXXX

I’ve found a place on line that sells self protection devices who have a really nasty looking gun that doesn’t need a licence (although their disclaimer says that you’re going to have to answer some serious questions if you ever get to use it). High powered and shoots multiple rounds semi automatic style of paintball size pellets of tear gas and some sort of shrapnel. Getting that. Love and HUGS! ❤ XXXXXXX

I take it burglaries are common in your area? We were broken into right after we moved into our house. The guy was still in the house when the babysitter came in with the kids. He had pried an entire window out to get in. I have a baseball bat my bed – you could have done some damage with that for sure!

Thank you – HUGS! The neighbourhood watch were kind of epic – all wearing combat gear. I think it’s down to us now though. We’re going to have to alarm and arm, because those guys have got good looks inside and shown no fear coming back for seconds. Not feeling overly brave though, so must buck up. ❤ XXXXX

Wow, that’s so scary. I like the baseball bat idea though. I don’t understand why they didn’t remove their arm when you started hitting them. It’s just crazy.

It really was surreal. The police put it down to them being high on drugs – which they take for courage apparently. I’m so glad we hurt one of them for when he sobered up, but scared at the same time that he might want revenge. XXXXX

Frightening and sad, Jo. What a horrible experience to feel so invaded. You might need scarier looking dogs – Bella looks made for cuddles.

She really does. 😀 She’s got a bit of Rottweiler in her blood though, so she doesn’t back down at all. Maybe we should get a really mean guy for outside – definitely a great idea. I stopped being pro guns in homes a while ago (my family had a proper arsenal when I was growing up) but now I’m really regretting getting rid of my 9mm while at the same time worrying about what would happen if the sods got to it first. In the US, they wouldn’t have trifled with garden tools–they’d have kicked the door in. Not that this is any consolation.

That’s terrifying! It’s like the first time here – they just ripped the security gate in half with an almighty bang without worrying about the noise or that there were people in the house. Makes you wonder what they would do if they actually got in. I just hope the bastards aren’t planning another foray.

Holy crap Jo! You’re a brave soul. That is a frightening situation alright. Good on you for trying to apprehend them, I can’t say what I would have done. And also, what a way to obtain a new reader, lol. 🙂

I’m pretty amazed myself for not zooming the other way actually even though I was well terrified. 😀 With a bit of luck they won’t want to come back to the violent, crazy, cussing woman’s house. Honestly though, these are some nasty creatures. When they do get in, they go out of their way to harm. Especially the elderly and children. ❤

I’m happy to hear that you and your family, and of course, your dog weren’t hurt. I’ve never heard of thieves breaking in with rakes. In New York, they just bash down your door. Keep safe.

Thanks Suzanne! It’s amazing that they’d actually do that in New York! I suppose we idealise your way of life from over here because of what we see on the moves and tv, although vicious thieving thugs really are all over the place. ❤

So sorry, Jo, that it happened to your family, AGAIN! Happy to hear that you are safe, and pleased you got a new reader! I was spell-bound when I read your blog. Maybe, after you have got over it, you could consider writing a book which included your experience. On second thoughts, you would probably prefer to forget about it.

Thank you Kathy! I reckon nothing’s off limits when it comes to writing, and it could be quite cathartic too – still having serious sleep issues. On the plus side though, we’re sorting out some proper security and more outside lights, so if there’s a next time the swine are very unlikely to get in. ❤
