Swopsies

Posted on

I’m going to try out a new idea, and hopefully some of you scribblers will be willing to come on board. The Absolute Indie is not only for self-publishing newbies, but also for Indies who have limited or zero budgets. Proofreading, cover design, formatting for Kindle or CreateSpace or any of the other bits that go into the publishing of a book can be expensive, and although all of these things are covered in the book, not everyone is keen to try. This is where swopsies can come into play. I’ve made a dedicated page for this here, and if any of you would like to participate or have any suggestions for the format that will be fabulous.
I suggest that you say what services you would be interested in swopping, and what services you would swop them for. I reckon you can never have too many proofreaders, so I’ll go first and offer proofing for proofing, or cover design for proofing. If you want to join the swopsy brigade then send me the link to your Contact Me page with your desired exchanges and I’ll put your name up on the page. Maybe also a link to your Amazon page so that potential swoppers can see what genres you write or your cover designs and the way you’ve formatted your books for if that’s what you’re offering by way of exchange.
I’m not suggesting that anyone forego professional proofreading by the way, so don’t yell, but I think that getting our work proofed by fellow scribblers rather than non-writing friends or only ourselves when the budget is tight is a much better idea. And if a few of us get on board with this we could make our publishing trips a lot easier, and I reckon it could be fun too. The page is up and there’s a widget in the sidebar too. All input and suggestions most gratefully accepted.

I think this is a really great idea Jo, I will be in touch. Publishing is so fraught with opportunities for new writers in particular to lose money and in all the excitement it is easy to forget the end goal is usually to make money! One has to make an awful lot of sales to cover the many hundreds it costs for an editor for example.

Excellent Stephen – I’ll add you to the list whenever you’re ready. You’re so right too – some scribblers spend thousands to get their book out the gates, only to sell a handful, and you’re right about the sales too. Who better to help each other than each other. 🙂

This is a great idea. I’ll have to put some thought into it. It’s hard to hold myself out as good at something, but I may have something to offer. I’ve certainly walked this path a time or two.

Nifty idea Jo and I’ll definitely consider putting my name down. I haven’t proofread others work apart from local friends so always a bit hesitant at the beginning. What lengths work were you thinking? Articles, short stories, novels? Best of luck with the venture.

Thanks Annika! I was thinking that anything goes – short or long. We can just contact those who are on the list and then discuss particular swops with each other. We’re all going to come at this not offering our services as professional proofreaders, but rather as writers, which I reckon is right up there on the pro list anyway because we’re doing it all the time with our own work. You’re more than welcome to join in whenever you like. 🙂

Great idea, Jo. I’m in. I need to think about what I can offer and what I’m looking for and then I’ll be back to follow the instructions. I think an Amazon link would be helpful or a statement about what genre the person writes in. I want to support other indie authors more and this is a great opportunity.

Cool Diana! Proofreading anything you write will have the added bonus of a superb story. When you’re ready, I’ll add you. The Amazon link would definitely be helpful and maybe the genre as well. Some people don’t read some genres at all – you’re right. Glad you’re in!

So this is almost like having beta readers if we chose editing or proof reading? (which I would we interested in) Can the books be earlier published works or do they have to be new? @v@ ❤

We can add beta reading too Viv – good catch – I forgot to add that one. We wouldn’t have to swop for the same – we can say what we have to swop and what we’re looking for, and maybe use the comments section on the page by following comments there, and anytime anyone posts a new request we would get notified. Definitely earlier published works – I’m hoping to give all my already published ones a new going over this way, so if you’re interested in that I’ll be happy to swop with you. ❤ X

It’s a great idea, Jo. In Spanish I’ve swapped translations for proofreading but due to the time involved in translating that usually would mean proofreading several works. I’d be happy to exchange proofreading with other (I tend to catch things out anyway) but not being a native English speaker I’m not sure if people would be interested.
At the moment I’m revamping things, but happy to leave my contact page for future reference.

Thanks Anita & Jaye! What you do is create a new page, and then use Contact Me in the title line. Third from the lift at the top of the page there’s a button that says Add Contact Me Page. Just choose the layout you like there and click to publish the page. It will always be at the top of your blog, and any time someone fills it in, WordPress will email you. Great to have you aboard! 🙂
