Weather Lizards

Posted on Updated on

I’m learning more and more that there is no point in freaking out over what is.  Recently a wonderful friend said to me words to the effect that if you look at a problem, and you’ve done all you can about it, and can do no more, then worrying about it isn’t going to help.  I know this of course, but I often forget it and still end up getting tied up in all sorts of knots about things over which I have no power.  In the same vein, if you live a perfect life, never making mistakes or getting anything wrong – well – if you really do say that then I reckon you’re probably handing out porkies there.  We all mess up at some point – it’s only the size and scope of the messes that differ.  Sometimes you have to accept that you have done or are doing something wrong, and if you can’t actually correct the actual act after doing the best that you can to, you have to stop doing it if you still are, or learn from it and move on.  Wallowing in anger or regret will hurt mainly yourself and serve no greater purpose in your life.  Life is, which we sometimes forget, finite.  Don’t waste it.  These philosophical thoughts brought on by once again not being allowed by the universe to TOTALLY control time itself and thereby never be late for anything again.  I’m starting to get the picture universe – ta for that.
Yesterday the power went off here at 4am, just as I was connecting my tablet to my computer to get cracking on my way behind To Do list.  We’re not expecting any load shedding for the next couple of months, so I immediately went to freak out mode, knowing that it must be a failure, and also that the service providers in this town are all no good at all.  That’s not me being nasty – they really are no good – at all.  Last week after a couple of days where the water was off, we were told that “A pipe is broken, and it will be fixed when it’s fixed”, which was really helpful, thank you very much.  Anyway.  True enough.  The power was only put back on last night, and by that point I was way too tired to even boot this old thing up, so now I’m a further 24 hours behind on the To Do list.  And I’m very sorry everyone – once again.  But.  Very big BUT.  I ended up really enjoying the day.
After doing a rather presentable Rumpeltstiltskin tantrum impression and angsting till the sun came up, I was stopped in my tracks by another epic lightning storm.

Clouds Coming In

And then more torrents and hail.

Front Step

Hail 1
Hail
????
????
I phoned the call centre and when they told me that they had outages all over the place, both in and outside of town – so not to hold my breath (those guys get 10 out of 10 for mastering the art of in your face rude – respect for that I suppose), I gave up and accepted this – nothing I could do about it.  All my major work at the moment has to be done on my computer, and I’d very cleverly forgotten to charge up my laptop, and also to download my current read onto my actual Kindle – I prefer reading on my computer, so I read one of the short stories in Chuck Wendig’s Irregular Creatures instead, about winged cats.  Now – that man has some serious writing muscle, and whatever’s going on in his head must be awesome every minute of every day even if slightly terrifying.  A great read, which I wouldn’t have read – probably ever – if I had been more “efficient”.  I squished the guilt and panic attempts as they arrived.
Eventually I gave up on all things electronic and just mellowed out and slouched around, only to discover that I appear to have become a lizard spy target.  They’re all over the place and all very interested in yours truly.  They don’t appear to have wings thankfully.  Actually, I love lizards.  They’re a lot cleverer than people give them credit for, and quite sweet too.  They learn that you’ll feed them if you take the time to try, and can often become tame enough to take food from your hand.  All in all I reckon they’re just as cute as any kitty.

Lizard Spy?  (This pic taken not with camera, but with my phone on high zoom, which has never been the same ever since I got a blob of Betadene on the lens)

At least most of my flowers weathered this particular storm not too badly scathed.

Now back to work – hopefully.  I’m holding thumbs.  Remember to enjoy a day or two now and then, regardless of the weather.

We are considering getting a solar installation, although that is a bit very expensive we at least want to get the geyser on solar, although I must say our Electricity is not as unreliable as yours has become. It is however becoming ever more in-affordable.
Anyhow, look at those hail ice cubes. Wow. I heard of someone stuck in the middle of the Botswana bush-field on Friday when one of those storms came down. She hid under her camping table to weather the storm……
Your flowers are still very pretty and I’m sure you’ll be able to weather your to-do list list just as well. 🙂

Solar would be lovely, but as you say, not cheap. Those ancient wood-fired water heaters were brilliant, although probably wouldn’t go down too well with the suburban neighbours. 😀 Up in Zim, even when the power went off for days there was always a plan to be made. Seems to me that living in town puts you at a big disadvantage when it comes to these things. We should all probably take on doomsday prepping as a hobby. Some of these stones were really big, but thankfully most of our stuff was under cover – only that one truck had to be zoomed under a tree. Thank you Sarina! I love my garden – I feel sorry for the wild creatures who couldn’t find shelter though – hail is nasty. 🙂

Yea, on farms a plan is always to be made. Either you start up the generator or something. My relatives actually still use those old type of fire geysers on the farm. They are also excellent for disposing of trash as well, such as dirty diapers.

Diapers – excellent fire fodder. 😀 I miss the old gennie from Zimbabwe. We also had a battery operated inverter so we could at least watch television for a couple of hours. Good old civilization!

That’s a hard question Tienny, especially if the problem involves hurting another. But I believe that the answer is always going to be yes. Life is a gift, and I think that wasting it in guilt, self-loathing and regret are just as bad as wasting it in hatred, anger or regret. I think it’s a sin not to at least try and get joy from what you have left – that’s just what I believe from my own life. Obviously if anyone else has been hurt then it’s good to try and at least apologise or make some kind of amends. If amends can’t be made directly, sometimes they can be made by helping others in some way. So yes – if you’ve done all that you could, then it’s time to move on to whatever life holds for whatever time that remains to you – as joyfully as you can. 🙂

I’ve done my best to apologise and make amends. Some don’t even apologise and make amends. I still prefer to associate with those who apologise and make amends.

Sometimes we do hurt in ways that are hard to make amends for. In pretty much a hundred percent of these cases it’s because the “hurter” is “hurt” and probably not capable of any other action because they’re generally too damaged to see the real picture. The fact that you’ve done your best to make amends shows that you’re hurting over whatever it is that you know or think that you’ve done to hurt another. That shows also that you’re a decent human being and you wouldn’t do whatever it was with full knowledge again. You can’t do any more. Accept your regret, but don’t waste your future joy. Move on and appreciate the gift of the rest of your life. Don’t ever let your sorry steal your life. That is the real sin. The past is – no matter how wrong we got it – wasting what you have left in regret will not help you or anyone else that you have hurt on purpose or not. Put that thing away, and embrace your future with the joy that it deserves Tienny. HUGS and LOVE to you. ❤

Hopefully you’re not angry with me for not having zoomed over your completed cover yet. 😛 Nearly there – just fiddling around a bit with the gold surprise on it. So keep an eyeball peeled for it tomorrow. Thank you! That blue guy lives around that wall – I’ve got loads of photos of him – just wish I could get closer without him running away because the hectic cropping takes away from how truly gorgeous his colours really are. The other little chaps generally hang around outside sharing the dog food, although this storm was really nasty so lots of them headed indoors.

Seems like you had some storm there, that hail looks rather spiteful! As for bluey, maybe you will be able to catch him again soon 🙂

Phew. 🙂 That storm was a doozy – never seen lightning like that. Flashes would swirl around like a Catherine wheel before taking aim and firing, and coming every couple of minutes for ages too. Nearly had me under the bed and I’m used to bits of hurricane and not all that easily turned to jelly. Our friends on a farm just 5kms out of town are still without power and downed trees all over the place. How goes the NaNo? I’ve got a way to head down here to catch up with everyone still. 🙂

I’m actually really looking forward to reading this particular book – I like to buy the paper copies of books I make covers for. Now you definitely will get all of that lovely swag – including the couple of free paper books on CreateSpace too if you’re going the paper route with it. Are you? I’ll make sure to do a blank for your back cover to match the front either way for later on anyway, but paper is always so lovely to hold.

Not my finest moment, but jumping up and down can really be a great release – especially if you catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror. 😉 I’ve got hundreds of photies of these guys – just need to find some time to collate them all. Some of them are gorgeous little fellows. I also have some photos of an unfortunate one being munched by a Kingfisher. Poor thing – although – I’m pretty sure that they sometimes cannibalise each other. I’ve often seen one with the tail of another hanging out its jaw. Still – we’re not perfect either. 🙂

Remember the times lizards got into the Florida apartment. Got rid of the insect issue until they left. Though we rarely saw them because of all the hiding places. Would a small backup generator help with the outages? Might not get much work done, but you could maintain a few appliances.

A small gen would be great Charles, but these past couple of years have been terrible cash funnels so the cost of them now puts one way on the back burner. Still – thank goodness my scribbler brain heads off with these things so I don’t get to feel too sorry for myself. We used to have a massive toad up in Zimbabwe that used to come out every night and ribbit at me while I typed in the early hours – eventually found his “home” behind a pile of files. Smelly, smelly, smelly. Still – he was a cool guy. Also had an invasion of field rats through a hole in the roof once – one zoomed right over my keyboard while I was typing. Not so keen on wild rats as far as household livestock goes. 🙂

Rats aren’t well-loved, especially in the house. We have field mice here, but they stick to the garage. Sorry about the cash funnel issue. Seems this year isn’t being financially kind to a lot of people.

I don’t mind the funnel at all – been there before, and these things aren’t permanent and always a learning curve to look back on. Got lots to be grateful for really and I’ve seen enough nastiness to know that my problems are actually really small ones. 🙂 You’re right though – a lot of people are really suffering with the world as whacky as it seems to be getting in every old way. I had a pet rat as a youngster – brown one called Simone, although I reckon if she had to be reborn and plonked in front of me now I’d run like hell. Not at all keen on rats now.

Jo, love the lizards and the flowers. Here is getting colder but… we’ll survive. Problems that never get sorted get very tiring and I think eventually get most people down, although it’s good to try and see things from a distance (usually only really bad things keep feeling so bad). It sounds as if you managed to do a lot of things, only not the ones you planned. Be well.

Double grrrr…at least you got some reading done and I love the photos of the lizards and I’m glad you’re flowers survived. Strange that eh? Such a ferocious storm but still petals all in tact. We have house geckos here in Pune. Many Indian women are scared half to death of them. I asked about it and was told that in the old days women cooked in open pots, and once in a while a gecko fell in. I’m told they’re poisonous, if eaten, a theory which I in no way want to test. It seems this fear has been passed down through families, as have many things here, and the fear lingers in both women and men. I like the little guys because they eat bugs. How can you argue with a woman who insists she prefers bugs to geckos. I don’t prefer bugs to anything. We also have power problems here. The local power company is a joke, but has improved its service in the city. In the country they go all day without power. — Suzanne J

We have such irregular power outages that we bought a generator. Other than that, I can charge my digital stuff in the car (although it costs gas). It’s hard to just let go and relax, isn’t it? I love your lizards – we have skinks here of various bright colors and my son had lizards at pets when he was growing up. I took care of his iguana when it was sick – had to inject it with antibiotics but it loved to be petted and would crawl out of its cage and sit there quietly while I stuck the needle in, then leaned in to get a stroking.

Lovely pictures, Jo! You must get very frustrated when the weather affects your Internet connection. We don’t have regular broadband here either, we have to rely on satellite. Most of the time it’s excellent, but in the bad weather this week it has been somewhat unreliable to say the least. I love lizards too. Growing up in the Middle East they were everywhere. And on holiday in Italy this summer, there was one which had copped on to the fact that our outside light attracted insects, so he would lie in wait above it every night and bag himself an easy feast!
